"When a painting works,
you know it right away.
There's a harmony
that's immediately
pleasing to your eyes."

              Tom Ranges

Six years ago I returned full-time to the world of art which I had left to pursue a career in the financial world.

From 1965 to 1970, I attended the Art Students League in New York, studying drawing and oil painting under the instruction of the renowned classical realist, Frank Mason. I traveled to Vermont and Maine in the summers to study landscape painting. In the early 70's, I moved to East Hampton to work full-time as a painter and my work appeared in several galleries and juried shows at Guild Hall. For two years I taught a popular oil painting class to local East Hampton housewives. During my years as a stockbroker in New York, Stamford and Greenwich, Connecticut, I continued my art, monitoring a life study class at the Rowayton Art Center, exhibiting my work at the Art Center and teaching an art appreciation "Learning to Look" Class at Rowayton Elementary School. I've also had the good fortune of being the guest art instructor on cruiseships, and to budding artists in the "Be Creative @ The Rowayton Library" program.

I've lived in Rowayton, CT for over 30 years and have spent my summers sailing on Long Island Sound and vacationing on Martha's Vineyard with my wife, Christie, and my son, Peter. Not surprisingly, I am focusing my current work on what I know and love most – landscapes, seascapes and marine portraiture. When the weather drives me indoors, I paint still life, seasonal fruit and flowers.

In the past years, I've teamed up with my plein air painting partner, Adrienne Mierzwa (www.artupstairs.com) for early autumn exhibitions of our paintings at Rowayton Yacht Club. In the annual "Art to the Avenue" shows in Greenwich, my paintings have been selected for exhibit at Kate Spade, Tiffany & Co., Brooks Bros. and Outdoor Traders. My work has also been included in the Community Cooperative Nursery School Art Shows in Rowayton, and the Annual Art Show Fundraisers of the Eastern Fairfield Junior League. I've exhibited my marine paintings at the annual Catboat Association meetings in Mystic. I've also been blessed with Christmas shows at the beautiful Convent of Saint Birgitta on Scotts Cove in Darien.

I am a life member of the Art Students League of NY as well as a member of the Rowayton Art Center, Silvermine Guild of Artists, Old Greenwich Art Society, Greenwich Arts Council and Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society.
