It's really not so different painting on the streets of New York than painting at the seashore. Great shapes and colors and light effects can be found most anywhere. I was reminded of this when I drove into the city this August and was lucky enough to find a legal parking spot on a quiet, shady sidestreet. Rather than lug my easel across town to Central Park, I set it up right beside my car and did the quick oil sketch above -- looking east on 73rd between First and York. I'd like to come back and paint the same scene this winter.
